NEW BEDFORD — Think video games are just for teenagers? Think again. Over the past year, SouthCoast nursing homes and rehabilitation centers have started using the Nintendo Wii as a physical therapy tool to help patients sharpen their motor skills.
On a recent Tuesday afternoon, patients from Southeastern Mass Health and Rehabilitation Center met Brandon Woods patients at their center on County Street to put their Wii skills to the test. The two teams faced off in a game of Wii Target Practice, in which players took turns using the Wii controller to shoot at on-screen balloons, flying saucers and other targets. Although games like baseball and bowling are also popular among some residents, "we thought (Target Practice) would appeal to a larger group," Ms. Viera said.
